# Is a Lifetime VPN Worth It?

A lifetime VPN is a one-time payment instead of a monthly or yearly bill. Some lifetime deals are fine, and some disappear when the company is sold. Here is how to tell the difference, and exactly what our own lifetime purchase covers.

## What “lifetime” usually means

“Lifetime” almost never means your lifetime. It means the lifetime of the product: you keep access for as long as the company keeps running that service and honours the old purchases. Running a VPN costs money every month (servers, bandwidth, data-centre rent), so a single payment has to be covered by something else: new customers, a paid upgrade, or a smaller set of servers.

## The real risks

- **The company changes owners.** In April 2025 VPNSecure ended its lifetime plans after an ownership change, as TechRadar reported. Buyers lost access.
- **The deal is sold through a third party.** Many lifetime VPNs are sold as vouchers on deal sites. If the provider stops honouring them, support is between you and two companies.
- **Quietly worse service.** Lifetime users may be moved to slower or fewer servers to protect the economics.
- **No updates.** An app that stops being updated eventually stops working on new iOS versions.

## A short checklist before you pay once

1. How long has the company been around, and does it still ship updates?
2. Who handles the payment and the refund? An App Store purchase is tied to your Apple ID and can be restored on a new device.
3. What exactly does the lifetime price cover: every location, or a defined set?
4. Does it require an account, or can you use it without giving an email address?
5. Is there a written no-logs policy?
